A 57-year-old Ukrainian woman from Kherson testified to US lawmakers that Russian forces beat her, threatened to rape her and forced her to dig her own grave. Lyubov’s story was one of two powerful and horrific testimonies shared with House Foreign Affairs Committee members at a hearing about Russian war crimes Wednesday. Investors are worried about an economic slowdown, but the corporate credit market is not screaming recession. Spreads on corporate bonds with low investment-grade ratings have not widened in line with the rise seen ahead of past economic contractions in 2001-2002, 2007-2008 and 2020, said John Silvia, founder of Dynamic Economic Strategy, in a research note Wednesday. He was referencing spreads over 10-year U.S. Treasurys for bonds rated Baa by Moody’s Investors Service, the note shows. By James Glynn SYDNEY–Australian consumer confidence fell last week, snapping a short period of recovery supported by the Reserve Bank of Australia’s decision at the start of the month to keep interest rates on hold for the first time in nearly a year. Consumer confidence decreased by 2.1 points over the week, according to a survey by the ANZ Bank and pollster Roy Morgan. The confidence reading was the seventh-weakest result since the outbreak of Covid-19 in March 2020, said ANZ senior economist Adelaide Timbrell. The retreat in confidence is also somewhat surprising as it comes amid news of a…

That introduction — we call them ledes in journalism — was written by ChatGPT, a language model created by OpenAI. Not too bad, but not quite what this reporter would have written. While I think, for now, my job is safe, it will likely look different…

An employee for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau made an unauthorized transfer of consumer data to a personal email account, the agency said Wednesday. Roughly 256,000 consumers were impacted by the incident, and the employee is no longer employed by the CFPB. Their names and transaction-specific account numbers at a single institution were included on a spreadsheet sent to the personal email account. The numbers were used internally by the institution and cannot be used to gain access to consumers’ accounts, the CFPB said. There is no evidence the information was shared beyond the former employees email account. The CFPB…

The head of the Bank of International Settlements, Agustín Carstens, also warned that interest rates may need to stay higher for longer due to high inflation and…
