Robert Goulder of Tax Notes and professor Mitchell Franklin of the Le Moyne College Madden School of Business discuss college sports programs’ not-for-profit status in light of compensation for name, image, and likeness rights. This transcript has been edited for length and clarity. Robert Goulder: Welcome to the latest edition of In the Pages. I’m Bob Goulder, contributing editor with Tax Notes. Now, if you’re anything like me, you probably spend a lot of time watching collegiate sports — honestly, probably too much time. One observation, though: If you’ve been paying attention, you just can’t help but notice that the…

A gated 75-acre estate in the heart of Bedminster, New Jersey, hunt country can accommodate an array of equestrian pursuits, with multiple riding arenas and thoughtfully designed modern barns surrounded by meticulously detailed landscaping. The property draws inevitable comparisons to world-class equestrian properties in Lexington, Kentucky, and Wellington and Ocala, Florida, said Sharon Ortepio of Turpin Realtors, the listing agent for the estate. The design aesthetic merges modern architecture with a traditional feel. Standout facilities include a 20,000-square-foot indoor riding hall designed by Beyer Blinder Belle that features skylights that span the length of the arena, retractable windows, free-span trusses…

I last wrote about the Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF (NYSEARCA:EDV) on March 3 when I argued that the inverted US bond yield curve was a reason to be bullish long-term bonds (see ‘EDV: The Inverted Yield Curve Is Another Reason To Be Bullish’). As I argued then, when long-term yields are significantly below short-term yields, this has typically resulted in long-term yields falling as monetary policy shifts dovish. This is exactly what we have seen happen since then, with 2-year bond yields falling almost 100bps in response to the regional banking crisis, sending 30-year yields down and the EVD…

Welcome back. President Vladimir Putin this week conferred a posthumous award on a bank robber turned ultranationalist blogger who was murdered in St Petersburg on Sunday. At the same time, a US journalist languishes in a Moscow prison, falsely accused of spying. What do these events tell us about Russia’s internal condition in the second year of its neo-imperialist war against Ukraine? You can reach me at [email protected] longer Putin’s reign lasts, the more obvious it becomes that political repression at home goes hand in hand with military aggression abroad. A pair of conflicting federal court rulings on Friday created arguably the most contentious and chaotic legal flashpoint over abortion access since the Supreme Court’s ruling last summer that overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the right to an abortion nationwide. Within less than an hour, two major rulings came down in separate, closely watched cases concerning medication abortion – in lawsuits that are completely at odds with each other. In one case, filed by anti-abortion activists in Texas, a judge said the FDA’s 2000 approval of mifepristone – one of the drugs used to terminate a pregnancy – should…

Gold prices are hot. At $2,023.70 an ounce—up 2.8% this past week—gold has about 2% to rise to hit its record high of $2,069.40, set in 2020. The yellow metal has gained 11% over the past month, and 24% from its recent November low, to flirt with the record. Gold prices are typically driven by three factors. Gold is worth more in dollars when the greenback falls in value. Lower bond yields mean less competition for gold, which produces no income. And greater risk aversion makes gold more popular. Bond yields collapsed in March—the two-year U.S. Treasury note yield was…

After last year’s disruptive tax season full of temporary Covid-19 rule changes and other complications, the 2022 filing season is almost sleepy in comparison, especially for investors.  “Activity is minimal – just a small amount of dividends and very few trades. Last year, everyone decided they wanted to be traders, but this year, people didn’t engage in the market as much and there are no tax law changes regarding investment as a whole,” says Tynisa Gaines, who has her own tax preparation firm based in Texas and is an enrolled agent, a special certification given by the IRS.  MarketWatch financial-planning…

April is National Financial Literacy Month. To mark the occasion, MarketWatch will publish a series of “Financial Fitness” articles to help readers improve their fiscal health, and offer advice on how to save, invest and spend their money wisely. Read more here.Ask and you shall receive — unless you’re female, apparently. A new survey from the Pew Research Center finds that both men and women often fail to ask for more money than what they are initially offered at a new job.
