Seemingly everyone agrees there’s a retirement crisis – everyone, that is, except for retirees themselves. In an April Wall Street Journal article, I noted that 86% of seniors in a Federal Reserve survey described their financial situation as either “doing okay” or “living comfortably.” Just 3% said they were “finding it difficult to get by.” That sure doesn’t look like a retirement crisis. In the process, they started what I think is a useful discussion about retirement security – a topic that is front of mind for millions…
Mortgage rates decreased a bit this week, remaining uncomfortably high for many would-be buyers but hitting their lowest point in months. Freddie Mac’s latest Primary Mortgage Market Survey, released Thursday, showed that the average rate on the benchmark 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 6.73% this week from 6.78% last week. The average rate on a 30-year loan was 6.90% a year ago.”Mortgage rates declined to their lowest level since early February,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist. “Expectations of a Fed rate cut coupled with signs of cooling inflation bode well for the market, but apprehension in consumer confidence may…
Despite President Biden’s request to reinstate the SAVE plan the administration created to help student loan borrowers pay less in monthly payments, the Supreme Court declined to do so on Wednesday. Lower courts blocked the plan earlier in the summer after legal challenges were brought up by GOP-led states. When the initial block came, borrowers who were part of the plan were automatically placed into an interest-free forbearance. During this forbearance, borrowers aren’t required to make monthly payments. The…

The district has almost 60,000 federal employees…
