Ergonomic design complemented by RGB
Razer devices have a certain look about them, and the Basilisk V3 Pro is no different. At a glance, it represents the brand well with its sleek black angles, mixed matte and glossy surfaces, and bright multi-zone RGB lighting. Its design manages to look tactical and modern without overdoing it with the kind of aggressive linework that’s become so prevalent in accessory design.
The right-handed asymmetrical form of the mouse also feels comfortable during gaming sessions both long and short. And the textured grip on the sides keeps your hand from slipping off or losing traction.
The mouse can connect wirelessly via its included 2.4GHz dongle, or through Bluetooth. We recommend 2.4GHz to reduce any potential for latency. The mouse always maintained a reliable connection and had no problems remaining connected no matter where we plugged the dongle in (even when using a USB hub).
On the downside, the V3 Pro is limited to just two colorways: black and white. The latter isn’t available directly from Razer, and it tends to cost more. It’s also a heavy mouse, weighing in at a whopping 112 grams that you can neither increase nor decrease. However, the mouse’s weight feels good in-hand and glides smoothly on any desk mat or mouse pad — even if it’s not ideal for users who prioritize speed.
11 programmable buttons that don’t get in the way
When it comes to gaming, the Basilisk V3 Pro’s 11 buttons cover pretty much everything a user could need. Even when you take into account mapping shortcuts for common functions like push-to-talk, secondary weapons, emotes, ultimate attacks, and sprays, you’ve still got plenty of buttons left to program for other purposes of your choosing. This makes it a great fit for several genres, and even opens up the mouse to be used with MMO (massively multiplayer online) games, which are known for tons of skills that players like to use buttons for.
The Basilisk V3 Pro’s buttons also feel great and are easy to reach with a normal grip. While some mice do manage to tack on even more buttons, they’re not always comfortable to access. Few mice offer as many buttons as the V3 Pro while still keeping each button easily accessible for users with varied hand shapes or nail lengths.
A feature that really sets the Basilisk V3 Pro apart from simpler mice is Razer’s HyperScroll Tilt Wheel. An option matched only by the Logitech G502, this wheel allows for super-fast scrolling with its free-spinning movement. If that’s too fast for you, you can always turn that mode off by clicking on the wheel, which returns it to the normal, notched feel that most gaming mice have.
The Razer Basilisk V3 Pro also offers tilt clicks with the scroll wheel; by pushing it left or right, you can side scroll, or bind another shortcut to your mouse. In testing, we found this feature worked best for switching between weapons in certain games. Or, for gamers who also plan to use their mouse for work, the side scroll is perfect for moving side-to-side in Excel spreadsheets.
However, the Basilisk V3 Pro’s scroll wheel may be too easy to actuate for gamers with a heavier hand. When furiously scrolling in the heat of gameplay, it’s not hard to accidentally click the scroll wheel instead — an annoying and potentially game-losing hitch. It shouldn’t be a problem for most users, but if you fear the power of your own strength, you may want to consider the stiffer Logitech G502 Lightspeed which requires a more forceful press.
Can be charged wirelessly or via USB-C
The Basilisk V3 Pro is rated for around 90 hours of battery life, which is solid for a gaming mouse of this type. And when its battery does drain, you can easily charge it with the included USB-C cable, or wirelessly via a charging dock like the Razer Mouse Dock Pro. The V3 is one of a handful of mice that is wireless charging compatible; just remove the puck on its underside and replace it with the charging puck included with the Dock.
This wireless charging feature is a huge plus. Rather than having to keep extra cables cluttered on your desk, it’s much more convenient to just magnetically rest the mouse on a dock and know that it’s charging. The Razer Mouse Dock Pro isn’t necessary to enjoy the mouse, but it’s a great option to add if you want to upgrade your charging experience down the line.
One of the heaviest mice available, but full of features
With so many options for customization, it’s actually easier to say who the Razer Basilisk V3 Pro mouse isn’t a good fit for rather than who it’s great for. Specifically, the V3 Pro’s 112-gram weight eliminates it as an ultralight mouse; users in need of speed will be better off looking at lighter models, like the Glorious Model O 2.
Don’t let its heavy weight scare you off, though. The V3 Pro’s weight feels natural in-hand, and it comes with a huge programmable DPI range of up to 30,000. You can toggle that setting either using the buttons under the scroll wheel, or in the Razer Synapse app. Synapse is where you can also customize your mouse’s on-board profiles, programmed buttons, RGB lighting, power settings, and more.
So, if you’re not a competitive, high-speed gamer absolutely in need of an ultralight option, you may still want to give this mouse a chance to win you over.
Should you buy it?
With a retail price of $160, the Razer Basilisk V3 Pro isn’t a cheap investment by any means — but price history shows a downward trend. More often than not, you can find the V3 Pro for less than $130. Compared to other mice at that price point, the V3 Pro reigns supreme.
With this mouse, you get all the bells and whistles you pay for: a premium build, 2.4GHz and Bluetooth support, an ergonomic design, smooth performance, plenty of buttons, cool RGB, and a highly customizable experience.
